This sentence-building game can make learning grammar and sentence construction fun and easy for students.

To play, each player receives 10 cards containing variations of funny words, famous names, and familiar places. The objective of the game is to create a grammatically correct sentence using as many cards as possible. If the sentence is not grammatically correct – or if it just doesn’t make sense! – it can be disputed by other players. The defending player and the objecting player get to argue their points for the rest of the players, who form a jury. In the classroom, a teacher can play the role of the judge to make the final verdict. The more ridiculous the sentence, the more fun players will have defending and explaining the sentence’s meaning and structure to other players.

A lesson plan can be found on the You’ve Been Sentenced! website, so that the game can be utilized as a classroom teaching tool. The activity kit also comes with rule variations so that the game can be altered to best suit the classroom context.

Getting students interested in spelling and vocabulary lessons can be difficult. Luckily, the OISE Library has a number of different games that help students learn while allowing them to have fun. Word Topper is an excellent resource for those looking for a fun way to encourage vocabulary-building in young learners. This word game is meant for students ages eight and up, and up to eight players can enjoy the game at once. This makes it a good resource for breakout groups or small classrooms.

Each card has a letter with which players can build worlds for points, and there are five different wild cards to keep the game going at an exciting pace. Each letter card clearly indicates the number of points that it is worth. Students can challenge themselves to use their vocabularies in new ways, as building bigger and more complex words means more possible points. This game could also be a helpful resource for practicing spelling in a fun way. Word topper comes in a compact box and contains a total of 137 cards, or 130 letter cards, 4 wild cards and 3 direction cards. The rules are explained in a clear way so that students can begin to play quickly.

Each side of the six foam dice in this kit has a different word ending on it, such as -ight, -ick, or -ame, for a total of 36 possibilities in all. To use this kit, just roll the dice! The word endings that the dice land on can then be used to build vocabulary and teach rhyming skills, by coming up with words that have the same word ending as the one shown on the dice. For example if a die lands on -ing, you might come up with ring, sing, spring, thing, and king.

Aimed at children just learning to read, the Word Family Dice are a fun way to build language skills in the following areas: decoding and word recognition, identifying spelling patterns, vocabulary development, and recognizing and producing rhyming sounds. The Word Family Dice kit also includes a booklet with a number of suggestions of creative ways to use the Word Family Dice in your classroom. These include, for example, asking all of the children to come up with words for each roll of the dice or asking them to identify the words on a pre-made list which match the word ending they rolled.
