<p>The First World War was a pivotal moment in Canadian history, considered by many to have played a large role in defining early Canadian identity. However, introducing WWI to Students can be a challenging feat; the horrific nature of this war is difficult to breakdown and represent to young minds.</p>
<p>The Battle of Hill 70: A Story of Canada in the Great War<em> </em>activity kit was designed to introduce your students to the First World War. The Kit allows your students to actively engage with WWI material, and learn about the people who endured this horrific event.</p>
<p>This kit encourages students to divide into small groups and engage with the various topics this kit organizes. </p>
<p>Within the kit you will find,</p>
<p>1 Teachers guide, 2 Books, <em>The Lads in Their Hundreds, Battle of Hill 70</em> (graphic novel), and 10 sets of envelopes titled,</p>

</ol><p>Within the envelopes above are various kinds of replicated media from the period, including posters, postcards, photographs, artwork, etc. Inside the Learning Strategies & Profiles envelope there are 12 topics represented by letters A-L. Each of these profiles include a worksheet summarizing a group’s task, and highlighting which coordinating booklet which provides the necessary information within.</p>
<p><strong>How to use this kit</strong></p>
<p>Within the teachers guide there are three suggested activities designed to help your students engage with the material.</p>
<p><strong> 1.) Exhibition of Learning</strong></p>
<p>Students in small groups or pairs will each receive a profile and its corresponding booklet. Task students to read the booklets and to select at least four of the items listed under the heading “learning activities” on their profile and commence their research. The students will read, research, and prepare a visual piece along with an oral presentation, to present to the class.</p>
<p>OR</p>
<p>Create two visual items, (Venn diagram, chart, letter, drawing, video, social media account) to display to the class or school.</p>
<p><strong>2.) Museum Curator Activity</strong></p>
<p>Let your students’ creative sides shine by having them be curators for the local museum. Assign a profile to groups of 3-4 and have them create an exhibit using materials they source from online, and the media in the envelopes provided. Have the students “pitch” their idea to the museum board explaining their choices, and what they learned, to the class.</p>
<p><strong>3.)</strong><strong> Jigsaw Teaching Technique<br /></strong><br />The teacher’s guide within also suggested using the Jigsaw method, and provided a link with further instructions on how to incorporate this method into the project. https://www.jigsaw.org/</p>
<p>Overall this activity kit is an excellent source to use when introducing your class to the First World War. Students will enjoy the group work while learning about one of Canada’s monumental events.</p>

<p><span>These conversation cards are designed to ask difficult and uncomfortable questions. </span><span>What Stands Between Us: Diversity Conversation Flashcards</span><span> probe into the experiences of racialized and non-racialized individuals by asking questions that many might be afraid to ask or acknowledge in relation to race, discrimination, and privilege. They spark important and timely conversations, expanding students’ engagement with issues that are often addressed during Black History Month by fostering meaningful reflection on these issues as they manifest in students’ own lives.</span></p>
<p><span>The flashcards are divided into four categories: Questions by EuroAmericans for People of Colour, Questions by People of Colour for EuroAmericans, Questions that EuroAmericans Would Like to be Asked, and Questions that People of Colour Would Like to be Asked.</span></p>
<p><span>A classroom activity involving these flashcards might divide the class into two groups; as these groups face each other, they take turns drawing cards and posing the questions on the cards to the other group. Members of that other group then try to answer, with individuals identifying as either a Person of Colour or a EuroAmerican answering the questions as respectively directed. The class can then share their thoughts and feelings more broadly in response to these questions and answers, generating a greater awareness of the issues and emotions that are faced and experienced by individuals within these differently racialized groups.</span></p>
<p><span>Sample questions for individuals identifying as a Person of Colour include:</span></p>
<ul><li><span>“What have you been through?”</span></li>
<li><span>“Have you ever felt uncomfortable because of your colour or ethnicity?”</span></li>
<li><span>“What are you most proud of about your ethnicity?”</span></li>
</ul><p><span>Questions for EuroAmerican-identifying individuals include:</span></p>
<ul><li><span>“What does it mean to you when you hear the word ‘racist’?”</span></li>
<li><span>“How do you feel about being with people who are different from you?”</span></li>
<li><span>“Do you realize the power you have and what you are doing with it?”</span></li>
</ul><p><span>The conversations sparked by these cards will be deep and emotionally impactful; as such, this activity is recommended for older students. Many questions in this set are provocative and responses may be emotionally charged. Recognizing the inability for issues of race to be treated with neutrality is a part of this challenging learning activity, and care should be taken to exercise this activity with mindfulness and sensitivity. <p><span>Let’s Go Code! Activity Set</span><span> is a game that supports the introduction of coding principles in the classroom without screens or technical knowledge. It’s a game appropriate for ages 5+ that gets young learners up on their feet, physically moving through coding puzzles as they build and navigate mazes with their peers.</span></p>
<p><span>The </span><span>Let’s Go Code! Activity Set</span><span> consists of 20 colourful foam mat tiles that are laid on the ground to create “mazes” for students to navigate. These tiles map a route from a starting-point arrow to an end-point robot. To navigate the route to the robot, students can only move from one tile to the next by following a sequence of coded actions laid out in additional coding cards. There are 20 reversible coding cards included in the set, each indicating an action like “move forward” or “turn to the left”. Students must devise a sequence of these coding cards that will move them from the start of the maze to the finish.</span></p>
<p><span>This game uses kinesthetic learning to introduce learners to coding and programming ideas. As the Let’s Go Code! </span><a href="https://www.learningresources.com/amfile/file/download/file/895/product/219/"><span>activity guide</span></a><span> notes, “the real building blocks of coding are found in critical thinking, sorting information, mapping routes between endpoints, and in helping children break down large problems into smaller mini-puzzles that they can think through logically.”</span></p>
<p><span>The puzzles possible through this activity are endless, and they can be customized with the addition of special objects and special action tiles that can be incorporated into the maze, requiring additional problem solving. For instance, blocked tiles with a big “X” on the surface are impassable, unless students include the special action “Jet Pack” tile in their coding sequence to fly above it! Many ideas for maze layouts and related games are included in the Let’s Go Code! </span><a href="https://www.learningresources.com/amfile/file/download/file/895/product/219/"><span>activity guide</span></a><span>.</span></p>
<p>Let’s Go Code<span>! is a chance for creative and kinesthetic learning in Kindergarten and early grade classrooms. It can be used just as effectively during periods of free play as during scheduled activities, existing as one station among many exploring coding and programming themes.
