Each student (or group) will use one of the seven experiment cards to build their machine. Upon completion, discussions of the methods used to build the machine and why they work, will lead to continued group interaction and learnings for all.</p>
<p>Simple Machines Lab includes: 7 experiment cards, lever (arm and fulcrum), wheel and axle, fixed pulley, movable pulley, 2 inclined planes (one-inch and three-inch) and landing base, four-ounce weight, 2 eight-ounce weights, string (18 feet), 6 plastic hooks, 20 rubber bands, ruler and a wooden display stand.</p>
<p>At the completion of this activity students will gain practical knowledge of how the machines are built and the scientific theories that enable them.</p>
<p>Simple Machines is targeted for students in grades 3–5.</p>

<p>Are you looking for an exciting, intuitive way to introduce robotics to your classroom? Meet Dash & Dot – two robots that can help your K-8 students learn how to code!</p>
<p>Dash & Dot work together to teach basic computational thinking, making them an immersive tool to incorporate STEM activities into your curriculum as well as an excellent choice for constructive free-play. Both Dash and Dot are app-controlled: simply download the apps you want onto your tablet, and Dash and Dot will connect to the tablet via Bluetooth (no need for WiFi to play!).</p>
<p>Dash (left) responds to commands from both the tablet and from Dot. Students can use the app to construct a chain of commands for Dash to follow that incorporate lights, sensors, and movements. Equipped with three proximity sensors to detect objects that are right, left, and behind them and with two sturdy wheels, Dash can easily navigate crowded classrooms and carpet flooring. Dot (right) responds to both the app and to physical movement – your students can even program Dash to respond when Dot is picked up and moved around by hand.</p>

<p>Everyone has emotions, but how do we express them? If you’re looking for a healthy way to help young students communicate their emotions, try using Emotion Stones! Emotion Stones can help children process their own emotions through the recognition of facial expressions, and can also be used to help them recognize the emotions of others. There are 12 Emotion Stones in a set: Happy (pleased), sad (upset), angry, surprised, frightened, worried, proud, confused, calm, bored, shy, and embarrassed.</p>
<p>There are many ways to use Emotion Stones in your classroom! To teach emotions through games, you can lay the stones face down and ask students to turn them over one at a time, having them identify each emotion and make their own face to match. Or, you can choose a stone and have students act out emotions for their classmates to guess. To help students to engage with emotions in a thoughtful manner, you can pass the stones around your classroom and ask students to reflect on when they’ve felt each emotion. If students are experiencing conflict or crisis, you can ask them to select the stone that matches their or their classmate’s emotions and reflect on why they are feeling that way. Students may also find that the flat, smooth stones are soothing to hold.</p>
<p>Emotion Stones can also be a great reinforcement tool for introducing students to other types of self-expression. For teachers looking to incorporate nonverbal communication in their classrooms, Emotion Stones can be paired with <a href="https://librarysearch.library.utoronto.ca/permalink/01UTORONTO_INST/14bjeso/alma991106426212806196">ASL (sign language) cards</a>. For older students, Emotion Stones can also be paired with <a href="https://omekaoise.library.utoronto.ca/items/show/783">conversation cubes</a>.</p>
