The Studies in Symmetry with Pattern Blocks kit is a fun, hands-on way to learn about geometry! By allowing students to explore the principles of reflection and rotation in an experiential way, students will be able to develop a stronger understanding of these concepts.

The Studies in Symmetry kit contains 48 designs on 24 cards and 250 pattern blocks in an assortment of shapes and colours. Each design makes use of one geometrical operation (single line reflection, double line reflection, or rotation) and can require anywhere from 10 to 62 pattern blocks to complete. Students will be able to work their way from simpler operations to more complex ones, all the while building their understanding of the underlying geometrical principles.

Other activities using the Studies in Symmetry kit include discussing each design to work out the operations before applying the pattern blocks and using the pattern blocks to create new and unique designs on a blank sheet of paper.
</text>

This kit includes 26 alphabet letter cards, with each flashcard featuring one sign of the American Sign Language Alphabet. Each flash card has two sides: one side showing a photo of a sign of the American Sign Language Alphabet, and the other identifying which letter of the English alphabet is being signed in both upper and lower case. Each card also displays a photo of a common object that begins with the featured sign/letter to help with comprehension and memorization. This kit also includes a summary card that displays all 26 signs of the American Sign Language with their corresponding English Alphabet letters for easy and quick review.

Although the flashcards in this kit exclusively feature the letters of the alphabet rather than whole words or phrases, they still provide a more comprehensive understanding of the theory behind the language and can be used to show how the signs can be combined and used to form complete sentences.
</text>

Cultures of the World Theme Box offers young children many ways to explore the rich diversity of our world’s cultures. Ideal for kindergarten students, the kit contains a number of props and manipulatives including national flags, plastic foods, and musical instruments. The props can be used for a wide variety of activities that address many aspects of the curriculum.

An accompanying guide includes an impressive list of activities and lesson ideas organized into 10 cross-curricular learning areas. Explore music and active play with instruments and songs. Encourage children to pronounce greetings and words from various cultures using photo cards with text. Promote dramatic play using the Dutch clogs and Chinese lantern. Explain the cooking and favourite foods of cultures by referencing plastic food props such as Mexican beans and rice or Japanese sushi. Create math activities by using stamps to make patterns, or by using the instruments to create rhythms. Learning objectives such as the building of number sense, identifying patterns, and developing motor skills are all summarized in the guide.

The kit includes a globe that can be referenced throughout learning activities to show children the geographic locations associated with some of the customs and cultures. Also included in the kit is a list of children’s books. Some of these books can be found in the OISE Library’s Curriculum Resources Collection. Bread, Bread, Bread by Ann Morris surveys the variety of breads from around the world, while Bobbie Kalman takes a similar approach related to dwellings in Homes Around the World.
</text>

Fun for kids of all ages, a parachute is a great tool for building motor skills, communication, and teamwork.

For ideas on how to get your kids moving, the book 3-2-1: Time for Parachute Fun! is the perfect starting place. Each entry includes instructions and illustrations, as well as vocabulary, objectives, and variations for each activity. Suggestions for games include:

“Mushrooming” the parachute: Have children hold the edges of the parachute and walk in a circle so that the parachute rises. Once it reaches a sufficient height, children “mushroom” the parachute by stepping underneath it and pulling the edges down behind them as they sit, trapping the air underneath the parachute.

Bouncing games: Children can practice teamwork and coordination skills by bouncing balloons on top of the parachute. They can try to keep the balloons in one place, or aim them towards an external object like a bin or target. Try to keep balloons from hitting the floor.

Colour Swap (from pages 42 and 43): Spread the parachute flat on the floor, and help children to sit around the edge. Working around the parachute, ask each child to name the colour that they are sitting nearest. When everyone has spoken, call out one of the colours and the name of a child sitting near it. This child will run around the edge of the parachute to the next stripe with the same colour. The child sitting in the new spot runs to the next matching colour, and so on.

With K’NEX Simple Machines, you and your students can build anything — let your imagination run wild! Towers, levers, pulleys, and more are all possible with this set containing over 1600 parts, 1 electric motor assembly, and 1 adapter. The only limit is your imagination!

Ideal for students in grades 3-5 (but fun for all ages), this set provides an opportunity for hands-on STEAM learning and invention. Groups of students can cluster to create different kinds of machines with the materials provided. Six instruction booklets are included in the set, explaining how to build a number of machines using inclined planes, wheels and axles, gears, levers, and pulleys. For teachers, a CD-ROM guide is also provided with activity ideas.

Consider pairing this activity kit with books like Inclined Planes, Wheels and Axles, Pulleys, and Levers, by Sally M. Walker and Roseann Feldmann, which provide real-world examples of simple machines in use and explain concepts like work, gravity and friction, and the related usefulness of simple machines with photos and building projects.

For an added dose of creative fun, have your class read Lance Dragon Defends his Castle with Simple Machines for further explanations of simple machines. Young learners will enjoy attempting to emulate the machines in the storybook and perhaps invent a few others themselves! The K’NEX Simple Machines Deluxe Set, like the K’NEX Amusement Park that is also available at the OISE Library, can be used for both structured activities and as a creative activity for small groups during free time.
</text>

Develop your students’ understanding of the past with one of the new activity kits at OISE Library: the “People Long Ago Resource Box”. Great for grades 1-3, this kit includes a variety of objects that you can use to show the pioneer way of life, such as a covered wagon replica and pioneer clothing replicas. You can discuss how clothes were different in the past by using the pioneer clothing replicas and the “Comparing Life Venn Diagram” included in the resource box.

The resource box also includes a number of activities and resources that will develop language, math, science, arts and craft, as well as social science skills. Develop your students’ language and social science skills with the reading comprehension cards and creative writing activities featured in the kit. You can also build a pioneer diorama using the reproducibles and instructions found in the activity guide.

We use it to warm and cool homes, to cook and clean, to entertain use, to grow good, to travel and to make products.” Energy is also what makes things move such as to ride a bike or drive a car.

The Renewable Energy Kit is comprised of many components that allows students to explore how the sun, wind, and water can supply energy to make things move and work. Through fun, hands-on building activities and experiments, students discover the basic principles of energy:

energy is what makes things move;

energy is something that is stored, ready to use, and which can be used up; and

energy can change from one form to another (energy transfers)

The kit also comes with an instruction-assembly sheet, and activity booklet that provide the framework for students to record their observations, collected data, questions and discovered using the kit. Each activity is accompanied by section with background information, teacher notes, additional activities, display ideas and answers to support teachers in the classroom. Discover how you can bring clean renewable energy into your classroom curriculum to build a sustainable environment to support a greener future.

The War of 1812 Timeline Activity Kit uses a variety of visualization tools to help learners memorize dates, figures, and important events from the War of 1812 and the decades leading up to it. These visualization tools include sketches, drawings, and pictures of artifacts that were pertinent to that time period. The activity kit also includes a teacher’s guide that provides a list of questions for students and a brief historical overview of the War of 1812.

This activity kit captures the war’s various significant events and moments using flash cards, post cards, and excerpts of historic texts. The kit contains over 130 different cards–each card contains a piece of information on an event or figure that impacted the War of 1812. These cards are divided into several different categories for students to explore, such as: weather during the war, geography of the battles, art and propaganda, exceptional quotes, battles on the water, and symbols from the war.
</text>

The Very Hungry Caterpillar: Storytelling Set allows educators to bring Eric Carle's picture book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, to life with colourful props and a puppet. The set’s caterpillar puppet transforms easily, from caterpillar to cocoon to butterfly. The props feature the snacks the caterpillar famously munches his way through, ranging from an apple to a cupcake. Additionally, the storytelling set contains a green felt board for displaying the props while reading aloud. The 17-piece set is surface-washable and appropriate for children aged two and up.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar: Storytelling Set can be used with primary and kindergarten students across diverse curriculum areas. The story could be used to teach kindergarten students about the days of the week, as the caterpillar eats his way from Sunday to Saturday. The caterpillar’s metamorphosis into a butterfly lends itself to science curriculum connections, helping students understand animal life cycles.
